The Tale of the Ezo Wolf

By: Hiroshi Abe

On a cold winter night, flying squirrels gather to hear an owl tell a story. He teaches them about the Ezo wolves, who used to keep Hokkaido’s deer population in check. One hard winter, the deer population dwindled so far that the wolves had no choice but to attack ranch horses. To protect the horses, humans killed wolves. They killed them all. Then once the deer population recovered, there were no wolves to eat them, so they continued to multiply, ran out of food, and began eating the human’s crops. Are the deer the bad guys? Whose fault is it, really?
